:SSharman Hoppes, DVM, DABVP ,

Dr. Sharman Hoppes graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1993 with her doctrate in veterinary medicine. She spent 10-years as a registered nurse prior to veterinary school. Dr. Hoppes practiced privately for four years following graduation in Irving, Texas. She completed her residency in avian medicine and surgery at North Carolina State University in 1999 and became board certified by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in 2000. Dr. Hoppes joined the clinical professional staff at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M in 2006 and currently serves as medical director of the Schubot Exotic Bird Health Center.

James Barr, DVM

Dr. James Barr is originally from Winnfield, Louisiana and attended Louisiana State University. He earned his degree in veterinary medicine in 2001. Following graduation, Dr. Barr practiced at the Westbury Animal Hospital in Houston then completed a rigorous residency program at the world-renowned Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr. Barr jointed the faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Emergency and Critical Care. He is a Diplomate in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care and enjoys all aspects of emergency and critical care with special interest in positive ventilation, CPR, fluid therapy and transfusion medicine.

The Academy and the Concho Valley VMA are proud to host the 10th Annual Fall Seminar. For 10 years, practitioners from around the State have gathered for a weekend of quality continuing education at the TAMU Agrilife Research and Extension Center in San Angelo.

Attendees have the option to receive 17 CE credits for attending this two day OR one day registration is available for those just interested in one of the topics or speakers.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2009

8am to 12pm - Avian Medicine and Surgery featuring Dr. Sharman Hoppes
This 8.5-hour lecture series will include a review of avian husbandry and nutrition along with related disease processes. Common emergency presentations and their associated diagnostics and treatments will be presented. Basic surgical techniques in birds will be explained along with an update on the latest research involving proventricular dilatation disease in parrots.

8am to 12pm - Every Day Challenges in Critical Care for the Small Animal Practitioner featuring Dr. James Barr
Both the morning and afternoon sessions will be a practical approach to common diseases and treatment necessities that are encountered in general practice. These sessions will be interactive and include several cases that illustrate our key points:
Fluid Therapy (crystalloids, colloids and blook substitutes)
Shock (traditional resuscitation, low volume resuscitation and corticosteroids)
Practical Transfusion Medicine (component therapy, starting a blood bank)
Appropriate and Judicious Use of Antibiotics
Management of the Septic Abdomen
