Veterinarian Involvement in Emergency Response: Meeting an Urgent Need
Speaker: Wesley Bissett, DVM, PhD

Effective emergency response efforts are based on a foundation of effective local planning and action. This is particularly true when dealing with animal issues. This presentation will focus on providing the framework for veterinarians to integrate into their community's emergency response efforts. The objectives of this course are as follows:

Hormonal Tests of Pregnancy in Cattle
Speaker: Juan Romano, DVM, PhD (Texas A&M University)
What hormonal tests are available in cattle? The following hormonal tests will be described during this session: estrone sulfate, profesterone, early conception factor, proteins specific of pregnancy. Accuracy, sensitive, specificity and predictive values of these tests will be illustrated. Their importance in clinical practice will be explained.

PEARLS OF WISDOM: Seven Techniques Toward Profitability in Cow/Calf

Equine Multinodular Pulmonary Fibrosis

Speaker: M. Keith Chaffin DVM, MS, DACVIM (Texas A&M University)
• This is a recently described form of interstitial pneumonia that has been associated with equine herpes virus 5.
• Clinical signs include: fever, lethargy, tachypnea, cough, respiratory distress and weight loss.
• Thoracic radiographs reveal a diffuse nodular interstitial pattern.
• Ultrasound reveals diffuse comet tails and nodular consolidations.
• PCR testing of BAL samples for EHV-5 is positive in some cases.
• Treatment includes antimicrobials, cortico steroids, anti-viral agents, and supportive care.
• Prognosis is guarded to poor, although some horses do recover.

PEARLS OF WISDOM: Breed Soundness in Bucks and Rams

Speaker: Juan Romano, DVM, PhD (Texas A&M University)
A demonstration showing the importance of breeding soundness examination in small ruminant males will be performed in Room 101 (treatment room) at the Large Animal Clinical Sciences Building. The significance of breeding soundness examinations (pre-purchase and pre-sale, infertility checks) prior to breeding season will be emphasized. A practical demonstration on the different components of BSE such as physical examination, genital tract examination, semen collection and semen evaluation will be carried out.

Pain Management in Horses
Speaker: Jenifer R. Gold, DVM (Texas A&M University)
This session will be an introduction will give a description of pain and nociception and the pathophysiology of pain. Secondly, behavior of pain in horses and the differences in expression of pain will be discussed. The lecture will finish with a discussion on balanced analgesia and a variety of techniques in dealing with pain in equine patients.

This talk will cover diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of the following reproductive emergencies of broodmares: uterine artery hemorrhage, uterine perforation, uterine torsion and pro-lapses of the small colon and bladder.
