Job Hunting with an Attitude
Can I, Should I, or Do I Event Want to Own a Practice?

Speaker: David King , DVM (Simmons and Associates)
Dr. King will discuss this issue from the standpoint of someone who hired vets for 15 years - some worked out, some not. Learn what's important to the hiring practitioner; it won't necessarily coincide with professional resume writers.

There are pros and cons of practice ownership. Benefits of practice ownership such as increased income, equity and autonomy. When is the right time to buy and what would be the right practice for you.

Not every veterinarian should be a practice owner. It takes a certain mindset for risk but the holy grail of practice equity is a great reward. It is also true not everyone wishing to own a practice should take the same path. Each pathway has its own benefits and rewards as well as its own drawbacks. However, every person wishing to become a practice owner should educate themselves on all aspects and pathways to practice ownership and then choose the best path for them.

Those who strive to become practice owners and have decided to purchase rather than build often find this pathway to ownership dauting. Anytime someone is making a decision that will affect the rest of their life there is going to be a lot of emotion involved. Therefore, it is best to go into this situation mentally prepared. To do this, you need to know what you want, what to expect and the pitfalls to avoid. Lastly, always remember to keep your eye on the prize.
