Name: Summer Woodward
Year: 3rd year, Class of 2011
Goal: Large Animal, Cattle Production, Equine.
Summer Woodward is the Junior Delegate to TVMA. A 2005 graduate of
Tarleton State University, she is the daughter of two teachers, her
mother an English teacher, and her father was an agriculture teacher. Needless to say, she developed an affinity for agriculture.
“I was always involved in activities dealing with agriculture and
livestock in my youth. It just developed into more of a passion for helping producers through helping animals,” she says.
Summer has a desire to help rural producers of cattle and horses in Texas. She’s been involved in cattle production and says she would like to serve as a link to the people out in those rural areas who have a need for resources. Recently, Summer was in Kentucky for an EP Wetlab and has also considered equine practice as a possibility in the future. She’s had the opportunity to work with radiology, taking advantage of new techniques that not a lot of veterinarians have. In between her classes at Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, she works a part-time job in radiology technology performing tasks such as equine bone scans, ultrasounds and digital radiology. Summer says she finds radiology exciting because of its creative aspect.
“It’s almost like you’re unlocking something to figure out what’s wrong. So you take radiographs to try and relate them to what is normal. In my mind, that’s using creativity. It’s creative problem solving and that’s why I love it.”
Apart from her duties as a student and junior delegate for TVMA, Summer is also a member of the SCAAEP, the Pathology club and is an Executive Committee Member of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
“I have the best time going to committee meetings, understanding that there’s something bigger and that we’re supporting each other.”
