An RVT is someone who has attended formal studies in veterinary technology within an educational institution that has been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Upon completion of the program an RVT has met at least the essential tasks that are outlined by the American Veterinary Medical Association. They must also take and pass a State Regulatory Exam and Veterinary Technician National Exam with a score of 70 or higher.

RVT National and State Exam
To become an RVT in Texas you are required to sit for the state and national exams. You will need to apply for the state exam with TVMA and the National exam with AAVSB. The next RVT State Exam is scheduled for Friday, June 18, 2010, in Austin. Applications will be posted in April, and the deadline to register is May 30, 2010.

Remember, you must submit a final transcript stating that you have been awarded a degree to TVMA before you can become an RVT. (Please note that the AAVSB may also require a final transcript. You can contact AAVSB by calling 877/698-8482)
Starting January 2007, AAVSB will be administering the National exam. To apply for the National Exam (VTNE) you will need to go to the AAVSB website www.aavsb.org.
(NOTE: The AAVSB provides each applicant with a short study guide to review for the exam. There are also two other books you can purchase either online or in a bookstore to help you prepare for the VTNE. "Mosby's Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians" & "Review Questions and Answers for Veterinary Technicians" by Colville.)

Results
State Exam Results will not be released until after August 1 by mail, so please do not call TVMA for your results. Your VTNE results will be distributed by AAVSB. If you have any questions in regards to the VTNE please direct your calls to AAVSB 877/ 698-8482 or send an email to vettech@aavsb.org. Please remember you must submit a final transcript stating your degree was awarded before you can be granted RVT status. Make sure your address is correct, & if you move, please notify TVMA via email or complete and return the RVT Information Update form on the tvma.org website. If you have not received your results by the end of August, call or email Andrea (Andy) Walker at awalker@tvma.org.
New RVTs
All new RVTs have to renew annual registration by May 31, 2011. Notices for this renewal 2011-2012 will go out mid-April 2011. Remember: all new RVTs receive their first year of membership free, however, you will still need to obtain your CE hours and update any information.
