Happy Holidays from TVMA
At TVMA, we thank you for your dedication and support during 2012. In the coming year, we remain committed to helping you achieve success that leads to new opportunities and growth. May your holiday season and New Year be filled with meaning, peace, and joy!
From all of us at TVMA,
TVMA staff has made a tradition of giving back to the community around the holidays. This year our staff was able to sponsor, and deliver to, three individuals through Family Eldercare, an organization that provides essential services to seniors and adults with disabilities.
We are in the process of finalizing committee appointments for 2013. If you indicated an interest in serving on a committee next year, either by an email or with your membership renewal earlier this year, you should receive a letter in late December/early January notifying you of the appointment. Most committees will meet during the TVMA Annual Conference in College Station on Friday, March 1, 2013.
Quite Simply, Thank You
In November, it is hard not to think about what you are thankful for, and the TVMA staff has so much to appreciate.
- We serve a great profession filled with intelligent, hard-working and compassionate members.
- The TVMA office is a beautiful building that we are proud to work in and show off to visiting members and guests.
- We have a dedicated team of staff members that work together to help carry out the goals of the association
- Our leadership recognizes the need to continually develop and explore new ideas and emerging technology.
- We have great working relationships with state agencies that allow us to work together on issues of interest to our members.
- We have a wonderful relationship with Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences – the administration, the faculty and the students.
- We have partnered with surrounding states to create the Southwest Veterinary Symposium, which offers the best all-around value in continuing education in the Southwest.
- Just as our members are encouraged to be involved in TVMA, so are we encouraged to be involved in, and give back to, the associations we belong to.
So THANK YOU for making TVMA a great place to be!

Get Involved By Joining a Committee
Did you know that TVMA has more than 25 committees that work to address all facets of veterinary medicine? These committees cover everything from veterinary practice and disaster preparedness to public education and animal welfare to so much more.
Here are just four reasons why serving on a committee might interest you:
1. You can meet and work with new people.
2. You can help develop and promote group vision and goals.
3. You can participate in discussions that impact your profession.
4. You can develop leadership skills.
Committee assignments will be finalized by mid-December. Annual committee appointments take effect at the TVMA Annual Conference in March. Committees are open to all interested TVMA members. If you would like to be involved in a committee but have not yet expressed your interest, please log in to your account at tvma.org and make committee selections on your Edit Profile page. You can also call Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or email her at email@example.com. More information about committees may be found here.

Does Your Clinic Use CareCredit?
We have recently discovered that a number of our members who are using CareCredit may not be linked to TVMA. Why is this a concern? This means that TVMA could be missing out on non-dues revenue that we receive from CareCredit for TVMA members who use their services. Non-dues revenue sources have allowed TVMA to keep member dues from increasing over the past few years while continuing to provide services to our members. If your clinic uses CareCredit, please take a moment to send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Include your Merchant ID number and request that your account be linked to the TVMA promo code. This in no way affects your fees and could be a tremendous help to TVMA!
The Business of TVMA
TVMA held a number of business meetings at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium (SWVS) last month. Twenty-one committees met to discuss topics and issues relevant to their particular scope and charge, including veterinary practice, professional advancement, disaster preparedness, public heath and many more. The Board of Directors met over the course of two mornings to hear reports from various groups and regulatory agencies and to consider items brought before them from the committees. A list of highlights from these meetings will be included in an article in the December Texas Veterinarian. Thank you to all of our volunteers who serve on the board and committees for your time and commitment to TVMA and the veterinary profession in Texas.

Thank You For Volunteering
April is Volunteer Appreciation Month, and this week is National Volunteer Week. TVMA is a volunteer-driven association. More than 10% of our members volunteer in some capacity for TVMA. We have 52 members on the executive committee and board of directors, approximately 350 committee members and various volunteers who serve on task forces or submit articles for publication in the Texas Veterinarian. To these volunteers, we say, “Thank you,” because you help us create and work toward a vision of excellence for the veterinary profession and communicate that vision to all veterinarians in Texas as well as to the general public.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” -Winston Churchill
Member-Get-A-Member Campaign Coming Soon!
Be looking for information about this year’s Member-Get-A-Member membership campaign. We have a fun theme, contest and prizes to unveil. Stay tuned!
Do you have volunteers at your clinic? Show them you recognize that they make some kind of sacrifice (time with family, etc.) and that you appreciate them by:
· Arranging a volunteer appreciation luncheon
· Having an annual volunteer appreciation dinner
· Recognizing their big events like birthdays and graduations
· Acknowledging them in your newsletters or on your website
· Creating a volunteer wall in a public place in your building
- Answer the phone. Have a real person answer your phone within 3 rings. Veterinary clients want a human voice, not an electronic phone system.
- Greet clients with a smile. Treat them as you would a guest in your home.
- Enter the exam room prepared. Take a moment to review the record and the patient's history and know why your client is there. They will appreciate this and it shows you care.
Newly Elected District Directors
In February, Dr. Aaron Rainer (Gulf Coast) was elected during the business meetings at the TVMA Annual Conference to a council chair position on the executive committee, and Dr. Ilene Cooper (Permian Basin) resigned due to personal reasons, leaving both director positions vacant. TVMA put out a call for nominations to fill the vacant director positions and as a result of receiving one nomination for each district, the election was considered non-contested and those candidates were automatically elected. Congratulations to our newest board members:
Jennifer Hennessey, DVM – Gulf Coast District
Mary Ann White, DVM – Permian Basin District
2012 TVMA Annual Conference Recap
Thank you to all of the members of the Board of Directors and committees who attended meetings in College Station in early February. There are many groups that claim their volunteers are the heart of their organizations. This is no less true for TVMA. Our volunteers give their time, talents and knowledge to TVMA, helping improve the veterinary profession for all veterinarians in Texas. They are the heart, brain, eyes and ears of TVMA. Here’s a quick breakdown of volunteer hours from the meeting:
- 21 committees met for an average of three hours each.
- More than 265 committee members, including almost 50 students, participated in those committee meetings
- 40 board members and nine officers met for a total of seven hours over two days
- Nine executive committee members met for an additional 12 hours
The collective volunteer hours during the three-day meeting was 1,291. It would take one person seven months working 8-hour days to put in as much time. Remarkable!
From those discussions, TVMA staff came back with 41 action items to take care of or oversee over the next few months, ranging from adding items to the website to researching member services to publishing articles in the Texas Veterinarian. Many of the action items will require even more volunteer time and effort to complete. As cliché as it is, we couldn’t do it without our volunteers.
If you are not currently serving on a committee, but would like more information about serving on one, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at 512/452-4224.
