Call for Nominations for Practitioner of the Year Awards

“She showed me what a privilege it is to work as a primary care physician, to be able to be the first line of defense, not only for a pet but for their owners. She works with a level of compassion and patience that not every mentee has the privilege of leaning on.”

“The one word that sums up his career is 'heart.' The connection that he has with his clients, patients and community is overwhelming.”

“She has and continues to exemplify the essence of devotion, compassion, service, knowledge and talent by the veterinary profession. Her life has demonstrated the great work that can be accomplished when veterinary technicians and veterinarians partner in the practice.”

– Quotes from actual letters of support

In the span of your veterinary career, whether that has been a long career or you are just starting out, you have undoubtedly come across exceptional colleagues. Maybe it was a teacher, like Dr. Mike Willard, who receive the 2018 Distinguished Career Achievement Award. Perhaps it was a mentor, like Dr. Michelle Boatright, recipient of the 2017 Recent Graduate of the Year Award, whose job at her clinic allows her to mentor new graduates. Or maybe you’ve witnessed extraordinary compassion, integrity or relationships with clients as many of our nominators have indicated. If you thought of a colleague as you read this, you know someone who deserves to be recognized for his or her great work. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2019 Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) Practitioner of the Year Awards, Licensed Veterinary Technician of the Year and—new this year—the Veterinary Paraprofessional of the Year for non-licensed team members. Designed to recognize and encourage outstanding practice and exemplary service in the veterinary profession, these awards are a great way to pay tribute to your colleagues.

Nominations are due October 15. To obtain a nomination form and criteria description, click HERE or call the TVMA office at 512-452-4224.

Correction to October Issue of the Texas Veterinarian

On page 30 of the printed version of the October issue of the Texas Veterinarian, the second paragraph of text should read: "The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) Practice Management Committee learned just how important mentorship is to veterinary students by conducting a survey—led by Randy Carsch, DVM, and with the assistance of Karen Cornell, DVM, PhD, associate dean for professional programs—of 150 third- and fourth-year students at the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine (TAMU-CVM). (Although there were 150 study participants, many didn’t respond to all of the questions, so the number of students who answered each question varies.) The New Graduate Employment Preferences Survey identifies students’ preferred employment attributes, such as desired patient population, clinic size and work culture." The online version of the magazine contains the correct text. We apologize for the error.

Current Committee Members: Please Read

Committee assignments for 2018 will be finalized by the end of the month. Annual committee appointments take effect at the TVMA Annual Conference and Expo in early March. Unless you have already communicated otherwise—for example, on the attendance sheets from the last meeting during SWVS or in response to the email sent to you last month—you will be automatically considered for re-appointment to the committee(s) where you currently serve. If you prefer NOT to serve on the same committee, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or email djakubowsky@tvma.org.

If you are not a current committee member but are interested in finding out more about what TVMA committees do, please visit tvma.org or take a leap by signing up to serve on a committee for 2018 and learning firsthand the work that supports TVMA and the veterinary profession. Email djakubowsky@tvma.org if you’d like to be considered for committee appointment.

Don’t Miss Out on Referrals

Don't miss the opportunity to receive referrals from your colleagues! If you have had recent changes to your contact information, including clinic address, phone or email address, please log in to your account profile and make sure all of the information that gets printed in the directory is as current as possible.

TVMA’s Recent Business Meetings

TVMA held a number of business meetings at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium at the end of September. Twenty-three (23) committees and the Telemedicine Task Force met to discuss topics and issues relevant to their particular scope and charge, including disaster preparedness, professional advancement, membership, One Health and more. Many committee discussions touched on disaster preparedness and response in the wake of Hurricane Harvey’s impact in August as well as on wellness issues. The Board of Directors met over two mornings to hear reports from various groups and regulatory agencies and to consider items brought before them from the committees. A list of highlights from these meetings will be included in an article in the December Texas Veterinarian.

More than 475 of your colleagues volunteer as board and committee members. Thank you to all of our volunteers for the time and dedication given to TVMA and to the veterinary profession in Texas.

National Veterinary Technician Week Is October 15-21

The National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) has proclaimed October 15-21, 2017, to be National Veterinary Technician Week. This annual event recognizes veterinary technicians for their contributions in pet health care. Here are a few ways you can recognize the technicians at your clinic during that week:

Post about your technicians on social media. Give them a shout-out, post a trivia fact about them or share a client testimonial praising them on your clinic Facebook page.

  •  Put up a sign in your clinic letting your clients know how proud you are of your technicians every day but especially during the week set aside to recognize them.
  •  Show them what a valuable asset they are to your team by paying your Licensed Veterinary Technician’s $40 TVMA membership this year.
  •  Give your technician time to visit elementary, middle and high schools to discuss their career.

Hurricane Harvey Resources

TVMA is continuing to work with a number of state and federal agencies and other non-governmental organizations as the Texas Gulf Coast begins to emerge from the disaster and destruction left in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and record-setting rainfall. Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and we are dedicated to helping our members in need. If you or a colleague needs assistance, please contact TVMA Executive Director Chris Copeland at 512/452-4224 or info@tvma.org.

If you are interested in volunteering your veterinary services, TVMA continues to gather names and contact information on behalf of the Texas Animal Health Commission and the Texas A&M University Veterinary Emergency Team (VET). Once needs have been identified, these organizations will contact you about your ability to serve as a resource.

If you would like to provide services in the impacted areas, please send your name, address, telephone number and email address as well as the type of medicine you practice to TVMA Executive Director Chris Copeland at ccopeland@tvma.org or 512/452-4224. Please remember that the State of Texas is asking individuals NOT to self-deploy.

If you have a veterinary facility and can board and/or provide medical care to animals in or near the affected areas and are willing to do so, please contact Chris Copeland and provide the name and location of the facilities, your contact information (name, telephone number and email address), approximately how many animals the facility can house and whether you are willing to provide medical treatment in addition to boarding.

If you or your clients would like to make a monetary donation to the TVMF Disaster Relief Fund, please give HERE.

October 2016

Honor Your LVTs During National Veterinary Technician Week

TVMA is celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week, which runs from October 16-22, by promoting its new membership for Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVT). TVMA created LVT membership because we recognize technicians’ significant contributions to the veterinary team and believe it is necessary for LVTs to have a more influential voice in the profession. This expansion of membership to LVTs aligns with the motivation behind National Veterinary Technician Week, which was declared by the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America as an opportunity to acknowledge technicians’ vital role in the veterinary profession.

Support and encourage your LVT staff to join TVMA and be part of the voice for the profession, or reward them for their hard work by signing them up today! Joining now will give them access to news, information, veterinary-related legal counsel and the digital Texas Veterinarian and will allow them to vote for their TVMA Board representative for 2017.

LVT membership is now available for only $40 per year. Submit this application so they can be part of the founding LVT members of TVMA! Contact Devorah Jakubowsky with any questions at 512/452-4224 or djakubowsky@tvma.org.

Wondering How To Get Involved?

Join a committee! Most committees require a minimal time commitment, meeting just twice per year during the TVMA Annual Conference and the Southwest Veterinary Symposium. If you are not currently serving on a committee but would like more information about serving on one in 2017, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at 512/452-4224 or djakubowsky@tvma.org. A list of committees and a brief description of each one may be found HERE.

The Business of TVMA

TVMA held a number of business meetings at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium at the end of September. Twenty-four (24) committees and a task force met to discuss topics and issues relevant to their particular scope and charge, including sunset review of the Veterinary Practice Act, professional advancement, membership, public heath and more. The Board of Directors met over two mornings to hear reports from various groups and regulatory agencies and to consider items brought before them by the committees. A list of highlights from these meetings will be included in an article in the December Texas Veterinarian.

More than 450 of your colleagues volunteer as board and committee members. THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for the time and dedication given to TVMA and to the veterinary profession in Texas.

Opening for LVT on the TVMA Board of Directors

Several years ago, TVMA listened to our former Registered Veterinary Technicians and played a critical role in the licensure of veterinary technicians. A passionate group of Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs) pushed for TVMA membership. LVT membership was approved by the TVMA Board of Directors and is now available at only $40. Veterinarians, please support and encourage your LVT staff to join TVMA today and to be part of a voice for the profession. Joining now will give them access to news, information, veterinary-related legal counsel and the digital Texas Veterinarian. LVT members also will be able to vote for their TVMA Board representative for 2017.

Call or email today so you can be part of the first LVT membership of TVMA! Call 512/452-4224 (ask for Devorah) or email djakubowsky@tvma.org.

Call for Nominations for Practitioner of the Year Awards

“The one word that sums up [his] career is “heart”. The connection that he has with his clients, patients and community is overwhelming.”

“[He] has worked faithfully at the helm to provide high-quality, compassionate veterinary medicine for his many patients, and he continues to be quite progressive with his vision for the future direction of his practice.”

“Not only is she calm, confident and professional in the midst of any crisis; she is also tireless, often working very long hours to help her patients. She is completely devoted to her patients and is focused on doing the absolute best thing she can possibly do for each animal.”

“It is my opinion that very few higher compliments can be offered to an individual than to say that they made a difference... and [he] has made a difference.”

April 2016

TVMA Keeps You Informed

Members receive timely updates regarding concerns that have the potential to affect them and their practices. Without this information, you are constantly at risk of violating ever-changing laws. As the old saying goes, “ignorance of the law is no excuse,” and TVMA helps ensure you never have to offer such a defense. Most recently, TVMA sent out emails regarding registration of X-ray machines, veterinary loan repayment application information and a notice about state board enforcement activity. The April Texas Veterinarian contains a 2 ½-page article titled “State Agency Updates.” Are you missing out on important news and information? You might be if your mailing address or email address has changed and hasn’t been updated in our records. Take a moment to check your member profile to ensure you receive emails and mailings from us. Log in at www.tvma.org and go to “My Account” then “Edit Profile” to make any changes.

Dr. Aaron Rainer, the current chair of the Council on External Affairs, has indicated his intention to run for Chairman of the Board, and, if he is elected, a new Council Chair will need to be elected. Because of a recent Bylaws change, any current member of any committee under one of the four Councils who has served at least two years as a District Director (see Bylaws Art. VI, Sec 4 Qualifications) may be nominated from the floor, and all committee members within the Council on External Affairs who are present at the meeting will participate in the election.

What Is the Benefit of TVMA to the Veterinary Profession?

This is just one of the questions we will ask in a series of focus groups this spring designed to gather information and feedback to help us continually enhance our value to our members. We held our first focus group in San Antonio last week and were not at all surprised that the very first, and most important, benefit mentioned was providing a political voice for the profession, followed by keeping an eye on legislative activity and keeping members informed through compiled, organized distribution of information.

In the most recent legislative session, TVMA tracked 80 bills related primarily to animals or veterinarians, adopted positions on 29 of those bills and lobbied aggressively to either pass or defeat the majority of them. We also kept our members informed through regular government relations updates of our activities on behalf of the profession. TVMA continues to work to protect the profession and keep our members informed.

January 2016

New Leadership Development Committee Needs You

If you have an interest in assisting in the development of high-quality, engaged leadership for the future of TVMA, we have a great opportunity for you. Earlier this year, the TVMA Board of Directors established the Leadership Development Committee (LDC), and we are currently accepting applications from members who would like to serve on the committee. Among other things, the committee is responsible for the identification of candidates for future leadership roles in the association and for developing and/or suggesting leadership training for members of TVMA who are interested in taking a leadership role within the association.

Identifying and developing future leaders is such a critical issue within associations these days, and it is not a process that happens by itself. That is why this committee was established. TVMA needs a group of individuals devoted to ensuring that we are recognizing potential leaders and doing what we can to help develop new leaders for the future.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in participating in, we encourage you to apply for a position on the LDC today. Attached you will find a description of the duties of the committee as well as a very short application form to be completed and sent to the TVMA office. We invite you to become a part of this important new committee that will play a crucial role in ensuring the future success of TVMA.

Board Election Ballots are in the Mail

If you are a member who has designated their practice type as Large Animal or Mixed Animal, you will receive in the mail an election ballot. We encourage you to exercise your right to vote for the representative of your choice. The candidate you vote for will be your voice at TVMA Board of Directors meetings and will represent large/mixed animal practitioners during discussions and voting that takes place during those meetings. Please clearly mark the candidate of your choice, sign the postage-paid return envelope where indicated, and return to the TVMA office. Ballots must be postmarked by Friday, December 4, to be counted. If you are a large/mixed animal practitioner and have not received a ballot in the mail, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at djakubowsky@tvma.org or 512/452-4224.

Current Committee Members: Please Read

Committee assignments will be finalized by late November/early December. Annual committee appointments take effect at the TVMA Annual Conference and Expo in early March. Unless you have already communicated otherwise, such as on the attendance sheets form at the last meeting during SWVS, you will be automatically considered for re-appointment to the committee(s) on which you currently serve. If you prefer NOT to serve on the same committee, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or djakubowsky@tvma.org.

If you are not a current committee member but are interested in finding out more about what TVMA committees do, please visit tvma.org. Or take a leap and sign up to serve on a committee for 2016 and learn firsthand about the work that supports TVMA and the veterinary profession. Email djakubowsky@tvma.org if you’d like to be considered for committee appointment.

Animal Reproductive Services Survey

Do you offer reproductive services in your practice, or do you have clients who need reproductive services for their animals? This study will investigate reproductive services in private practice to determine if there is a need for these services and how to best fill that need. You can help by clicking HERE to complete a very brief 10-question survey regarding reproductive services at your practice.

Results will be shared upon conclusion of the survey.

October 2015

The Business of TVMA

TVMA held a number of business meetings at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium (SWVS) at the end of September. Twenty-three committees and a task force met to discuss topics and issues relevant to their particular scope and charge, including sunset review of the Veterinary Practice Act, professional advancement, membership, public heath and more. The Board of Directors met over two mornings to hear reports from various groups and regulatory agencies and to consider items brought before them from the committees. A list of highlights from these meetings will be included in an article in the December Texas Veterinarian.

Quick Fact: More than 390 of your colleagues volunteer as board and committee members. THANK YOU to all of our volunteers for the time and dedication given to TVMA and the veterinary profession in Texas.

Don’t Miss Out on Referrals

TVMA members tell us they frequently use the TVMA directory (yes, the old-school, hard-copy, spiral-bound printed directory) when referring clients who are moving to other areas of the state. Don't miss the opportunity to receive referrals from your colleagues! If you have had recent changes to your contact information, including clinic address, phone or email address, please log in to your account profile and make sure all of the information that gets printed in the directory is current.

Wondering How To Get Involved?

Join a committee! Most committees require a minimal time commitment, meeting just two times per year—during the TVMA Annual Conference and the Southwest Veterinary Symposium. If you are not currently serving on a committee but would like more information about serving on one in 2016, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or

“I am extremely honored and humbled to be nominated for the prestigious TVMA Food Animal Practitioner of the Year Award.” – Quotes from actual letters of acceptance

It is always interesting to receive the responses from nominees when they are notified about their nomination because the overwhelming reaction is humble and undeserving. Yet when we receive the letters of nomination and of support, it is clear that their colleagues have seen something in them worthy of recognition. Maybe it is their knowledge of practicing veterinary medicine that causes colleagues to seek them out for advice. Maybe it is their deep passion for mentoring recent graduates to help them succeed. Or maybe it is their compassion for the animals they care for and the owners they connect with.

While reading this, have you thought of a colleague who has made a positive impact on the veterinary profession? If so, give them the opportunity to be recognized by, and in front of, their colleagues.

Call for Nominations for Leadership

TVMA is now accepting nominations for president-elect and district director. If you know someone who would make a great leader for the association, please consider nominating him/her.

Due to some changes in the TVMA governance structure, several new positions have opened up on the board. The following letter from TVMA President Dr. Russell Ueckert has been mailed out to all members this week and provides an explanation about these changes as well as a listing of the open positions.

Dear TVMA Member:

In 2013, a task force of TVMA members was created by Dr. Jed Ford to address one of the Critical Strategic Issues identified in TVMA’s Strategic Plan for 2013-2018: “Enhancing our Governance Capability.” The task force was charged with recommending changes to enhance and promote a culture of engagement, effectiveness, efficiency and high-quality, consequential decision-making as well as determining if the current governance structure would meet future needs of the membership, the profession and the association.

During the February 2015 meeting of the TVMA Board of Directors, a resolution was presented by the task force and passed by the board to change the structure of the TVMA Board of Directors. Over the next few years, the board will shift from two representatives per district to one. This will occur as directors roll off at their request or as their terms end naturally. This will eventually result in 19 directors representing 19 geographical districts and continued representation from a student elected by the student body at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

In addition, in an effort to connect and communicate with membership in a way that members have identified as more meaningful, the resolution includes five (5) directors who will represent practice types and two (2) at-large directors, all to be elected statewide. These positions include:

· Equine

· Bovine (Large Animal)

· Shelter

· Industry/Public Health/Regulatory/Military

· Lab Animal/Teaching, Research/Diagnostic

· Two (2) at-large positions

Attached please find a nomination form listing all of the open positions on the TVMA Board of Directors. We hope that you will consider this opportunity to join TVMA leadership and help guide your association to fulfill its mission to promote, advocate for and protect the veterinary medical profession and to advance animal health for the well-being of animals and humans.

Sincerely,

Russell Ueckert, DVM
2015 TVMA President

July 2015

Call for Nominations for Practitioner of the Year Awards

“It is my opinion that very few higher compliments can be offered to an individual than to say that they made a difference... and [he] has made a difference.”

“You see, I never heard clients talking about how skillful [she] was with her scalpel, or about the precision of her cuts, or how she can do the most intricate of surgeries without even breaking a sweat…it is the compassionate side of her that touches people, it is the intensity with which she approaches every case to make sure they are treated the way she would treat her own pets…it is her integrity, her ability to make you laugh when you want to cry, her ability to relate that endears her to her clients and to her colleagues and friends.” – Quotes from actual letters of support

If these quotes bring a colleague to mind, nominate him or her for a Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) award today. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016 TVMA Practitioner of the Year Awards. Does Your Clinic Use CareCredit?

We have discovered that a number of our members who are using CareCredit may not be linked to TVMA. Why is this a concern? This means that TVMA could be missing out on non-dues revenue that we receive from CareCredit for TVMA members who use them. Non-dues revenue sources allow TVMA to keep member dues as low as possible while continuing to provide services to our members. If your clinic uses CareCredit and you are not sure if you have contacted CareCredit to confirm your account is linked to TVMA, please take a moment to send an email to tvmasupport@carecredit.com. Include your Merchant ID number and request that your account be linked to the TVMA promo code. This in no way affects your fees and could be a tremendous help to TVMA!

Committee Appointment Letters are in the Mail

Most of the committee rosters for 2015 are completed, and if you expressed an interest in serving on a committee, you should have received a letter in the mail this week notifying you of your appointment for the year. If you expected to be appointed to a committee and you do not receive a letter by Friday, January 23, please call Devorah at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224.

Outgoing committee member thank-you letters were sent out last week. Many times a member is removed from a committee due to lack of attendance at meetings over the past year or not indicating an interest to serve again. We know there are times when it is not possible to make every meeting, so if you feel you were removed from a committee roster in error and would like to continue to serve, don’t hesitate to contact Devorah at the TVMA office.

TAMU-CVM to Host Heifer International Benefit Banquet on April 18

The Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2017 is proud to announce the Second Annual Heifer International Benefit Banquet, which will be held on April 18 at 6 p.m. at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM '56 Equine Complex in College Station. Please save the date for this wonderful opportunity to help international rural communities in need!

The banquet will be a semi-formal event including dinner and entertainment. There also will be a silent auction with many unique items donated from local Bryan/College Station businesses.

Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. Through the gift of a livestock animal or group of animals, families and communities are empowered to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture through the "teach a man to fish" philosophy. The animals that are donated provide families with both food and reliable income with agricultural products from their donated livestock such as milk, eggs and honey, which are sold at local markets or traded for other goods. To learn more about the way Heifer partners with groups or the different livestock options to choose, visit www.heifer.org.

Last year, the Heifer International Benefit Banquet raised $3,600, and Heifer International used the funds to send 30 goats to a community in Cambodia. This year our goal is to raise $7,500.

Happy 2015

As we begin a new year, we want to thank you for your continued membership and support of TVMA and your profession. We wish you a year of great happiness and success, and we look forward to working together to make 2015 a wonderful year!

BOD Considers Membership/Dues Issues

The TVMA Membership Committee has been working on various ways to continue to provide value to our membership and to create opportunities to attract new members. Recently, a proposal was submitted to the Board of Directors from the Membership Committee for consideration. The proposal states: The Membership Committee is in favor of developing a consistent, standardized method of assessing dues reduction for all large organizations and multi-doctor private practices. The committee does not support engaging in individual negotiations with large organizations. Additionally, the Membership Committee is in favor of a one-year provisional membership agreement with Banfield as part of the process of developing tiered membership categories.

Currently, Banfield employees more than 320 veterinarians within the state of Texas, and at this time only 26 of those are active TVMA members. The proposed agreement would be provisional, lasting only one year to begin with, which will give the board time to undertake a more in-depth review of TVMA’s membership categories and dues structure. Under the proposal, almost 300 Banfield veterinarians would become new members of TVMA, paying dues of $189 per veterinarian.

The TVMA Board of Directors has voted in support of this proposal. Since a portion of this proposal has an effect on membership dues, in accordance with TVMA bylaws, this is being published in a publication of general circulation and will be brought back before the Board of Directors for a final vote at the TVMA Annual Conference and Expo on February 26 to March 1.

Should you have any comments or concerns, please contact your TVMA District Director.

Happy Holidays from TVMA

We just want to take a moment to thank you for your dedication and support during 2014. As we near the new year, we remain committed to helping you achieve success that leads to new opportunities and growth. May your holiday season and new year be filled with peace, joy and great success!

From all of us at TVMA,

Happy Holidays!

TVMA Announces New Business Alliance

We are excited to introduce Trinity Merchant Group (TMG) as a new payment processing solution for our members. TMG is an Aggie-owned and operated merchant services company based in Fort Worth. TMG has a strong presence across Texas, including in major markets Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. They provide you access to a full suite of in-house products and services, including credit card and debit card processing, online reporting, e-commerce gateway, gift cards and check guarantee programs as well as ACH processing.

Visit the TMG website at www.tmgvets.com or contact Clay Farrell at cfarrell@tmgvets.com or 817/528-8805 for more information.

Message from the Business Alliance Committee Chair

TVMA still has an alliance with Infintech for payment processing. Our representative, Kevin Walter, has done a great job of providing customer service and low rates to our members, and we will continue to support our relationship with Infintech. The members of our Business Alliance Committee (BAC) strongly believe that it is in our members’ best interest to have options. We are not always able to offer options for our member programs, but fortunately, there are several credit card processors who are willing to provide great rates for TVMA members. After careful consideration, the BAC has decided to launch the new alliance with TMG.

Both Infintech and TMG promise to do the best for our members. If you are currently looking for a new processing company, I encourage you to look into both companies to see which one benefits you the most. Feel free to contact Devorah Jakubowsky at 512/452-4224 or djakubowsky@tvma.org if you have any questions.

And please consider looking into our other business alliances that offer special member pricing. Information may be found

HERE

Thank you,

Michael Joyner, DVM

Business Alliance Committee Chair

Get Involved! Join a Committee

Do you know TVMA has more than 25 committees that work to address all facets of veterinary medicine? This includes veterinary practice, disaster preparedness, public education, animal welfare and many more.

Here are just three reasons why serving on a committee might interest you:

1. Meet and work with new people

2. Participate in discussions that impact your profession

3. Develop leadership skills

Committee assignments will be finalized by late November. Annual committee appointments take effect at the TVMA Annual Conference in late February. Committees are open to all interested TVMA members. If you would like to be involved on a committee but have not yet expressed your interest, please call Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or email djakubowsky@tvma.org.

More information about committees may be found HERE.

Don’t Miss Out on Referrals

A number of members use the TVMA directory (yes, the old-school, hard-copy, spiral-bound, printed directory) when referring clients who are moving to other areas of the state. Don't miss the opportunity to receive referrals from your colleagues! If you’ve had recent changes to your contact information including clinic address, phone or email address, please log into your TVMA account profile and make sure all of the information that gets printed in the directory is as current as possible.

BREAKING NEWS: TVMA will be providing a digital version of the 2015 directory that can be downloaded onto your computer or tablet.

The Business of TVMA

TVMA held a number of business meetings at the Southwest Veterinary Symposium last week. Nineteen committees and two task forces met to discuss topics and issues relevant to their particular scope and charge, including veterinary practice, professional advancement, membership, public heath and more. The Board of Directors met over the course of two mornings to hear reports from various groups and regulatory agencies and to consider items brought before them from the committees. A list of highlights from these meetings will be included in an article in the December Texas Veterinarian.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who serve on the board and committees for their time and commitment to TVMA and the veterinary profession in Texas.

Wondering How to Get Involved?

Join a committee! Most committees require a minimal time commitment, meeting just two times per year during the TVMA Annual Conference and the Southwest Veterinary Symposium. If you are not currently serving on a committee but would like more information about serving on one, please contact Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224 or djakubowsky@tvma.org. A list of committees and a brief description of each one may be found HERE.

It May Not Be the Emmys

But just as the Emmy Awards recognize excellence within various areas of television and emerging media, the TVMA Practitioner of the Year awards recognize and encourage outstanding practice and exemplary service in the veterinary profession.

And like the Emmys, these awards are a symbol of peer recognition and a great way to pay tribute to your colleagues. If you have ever admired a colleague for their knowledge, dedication, innovation or passion for their work, you know someone who could be honored by you and your peers.

Award winners are selected by the Awards Committee and will be honored during the Presentation Banquet at the TVMA Annual Conference in Arlington in March. Award winners are also profiled throughout the year in the Texas Veterinarian. Qualified TVMA members may be nominated in a number of categories. To obtain a nomination form and criteria description, click HERE. Nominations are due September 29.

Thoughts from a Former TVMA Board Member

Why would a veterinarian take time from his or her busy life and donate it to the TVMA or “what’s in it for me”?

You meet people, make friends. Not just any people but the leaders and visionaries in your profession. You see decisions being made which will affect you and your professional life, actually-you help make those decisions. You quickly realize that TVMA is the ONLY organization “guarding” our profession from outside threats, and there are many. You serve on committees and chart the course your state organization will take to serve you and your colleagues. You quickly learn the annual dues are a real bargain.

You are “forced’ to leave your practice routine twice a year for board meetings, committee meetings and excellent continuing education. This is a good thing. It shakes up your routine a little and keeps you out of the ruts we often dig for ourselves. You return to work tired but with a new enthusiasm.

You interact with intelligent, energetic people of different ages, backgrounds, viewpoints and work lives. The energy of others is often contagious. This expands your knowledge of the profession and helps you appreciate different perspectives. You socialize with these people during these meetings and probably learn more useful information than from the formal C.E. we all attend.

And, when your time as a board member comes to an end you think you will miss all the above but you won’t. You will continue to contribute either in leadership positions or serving on committees, special task forces or foundation boards as you will have learned that YOU are the TVMA and the organization is only as good as its participants make it be.

Dr. Ken Diestler, TVMA Gulf Coast District Director 2006-2012
The Animal Clinic
701 Broadway
Galveston, TX 77550

Local Area VMAs

Did you know there are 32 active local veterinary medical associations (LVMAs) across the state of Texas? In a state this big, it can sometimes be a challenge to meet with other veterinarians. LVMAs provide opportunities for Texas veterinarians to get together with colleagues in their area for continuing education, networking and just good old fun. A list of the LVMAs and their contact information can be found HERE.

Proposed Bylaws Amendments

TVMA Bylaws may be amended or repealed by a two-thirds majority vote of the TVMA Board of Directors provided the proposed amendment has been:

A. Presented by the Executive Committee for review and opinion and presentation to the Board of Directors

B. Published in a TVMA publication of general circulation at least two months before the Board of Directors meeting at which a vote is to be taken on the proposed change. Upon passage by a two-thirds majority vote of the Board of Directors, the amendment shall be valid and effective immediately.

There are five proposed amendments that will be voted on by the TVMA Board of Directors on September 25. The proposed amendments make a slight change to the mission statement, correct a numerical error in referencing a section of the bylaws, clarify that only voting members may elect council chairs, expand the qualifications for student membership to include all universities (students in curriculum of veterinary medicine) and remove a qualification for new resident membership. Here are four suggestions for celebrating National Pet Week in the clinic.

Committee Appointment Letters are in the Mail

Most of the committee rosters for 2014 are completed, and if you expressed an interest in serving on a committee, you should have received a letter in the mail this week notifying you of your appointment for the year. If you expected to be appointed to a committee and you do not receive a letter by Friday, January 21, please call Devorah at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224.

Happy New Year

It’s hard to believe that another year has gone by! As we begin a new year, we want to thank you for your continued support of TVMA and your profession. We are grateful to work for such a wonderful profession, and we wish you a year of great happiness and success.

Committee Appointments

Committee rosters for 2014 are almost finalized. If you indicated an interest in serving on a committee next year either by an email or with your membership renewal last year, you should receive a letter in the next week notifying you of the appointment. If you expect to be appointed to a committee and you do not receive a letter by Friday, January 17, please call Devorah Jakubowsky at the TVMA office at 512/452-4224.

Most committees will meet during the TVMA Annual Conference in College Station on the afternoon of Friday, February 28.

This New Year, Resolve to Improve Pet Health Information Online

Improve the quality of pet health information available online by becoming a writer or peer reviewer for TexVetPets.org, TVMA’s upcoming pet health website for Texas pet owners. TexVetPets.org provides a platform for Texas veterinarians to communicate reliable information to the public while demonstrating veterinarians’ dedication to pet wellness and responsible pet ownership. TexVetPets.org’s content will rise above other, often unreliable, online resources by offering content created and reviewed by Texas pet experts—TVMA members.

As a volunteer, you will write or review only as many articles as you would like, and you can do it on a flexible schedule that fits the time you have available. Contact TVMA Communications Associate Dawn Noufer at dnoufer@tvma.org or 512/452-4224 to get involved with TexVetPets.org or with any questions.

New Year, New Business

Is one of your goals for the new year to save money? Has it been awhile since you reviewed your business vendors? Why not take a look at TVMA’s business alliances to see how much you can save on electricity, credit card processing, insurance and other services?

See information on all of our endorsed vendors HERE.

PRACTICE TIPS:

  • Only middle school-level entrants are eligible to participate
  • Artwork should show a veterinarian at work
  • Artwork must be on 8 ½” x 11” paper and must be portrait/vertical orientation
  • Artwork may be any medium, including watercolor, crayons, colored pencils, markers, etc. NO photography. DO NOT FOLD.
  • Keep flat and mail in a large envelope to 8104 Exchange Drive, Austin, TX 78754

  • Party Time: Hosting an open house or party at your clinic gives your clients and patients a chance to visit your practice outside of the sometimes-stressful vaccine visits and also allows community members who have been curious about your clinic to stop by, meet you and check out your clinic. Your open house or party could include a behind-the-scenes tour, pet-themed games and free nail trims.

  • Media Involvement: To shine a bigger spotlight on National Pet Week, reach out to the local media by sending out a press release from your clinic. The Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) will send out a statewide press release for National Pet Week, and you can get the text from that press release to use for your own clinic by contacting TVMA Communications Associate Dawn Noufer at 512/452-4224 or dnoufer@tvma.org. You might also contact the office of your local mayor or city council to ask for a government proclamation in honor of National Pet Week.

  • Contests for Kids: Get the younger generation involved by sponsoring an essay or coloring contest for the kids in your clinic's community. Partnering with local schools, libraries, churches or restaurants will give the contest a further reach while also extending the reach of your clinic to the parents of contest participants, who may be potential clients.
